🌍 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗧 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

The Anti-Human Trafficking Department (AHTD), under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, is joining the global community to commemorate the 2026 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons under the theme:

🎭 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗗 𝗕𝗘𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠

This year’s commemoration highlights a critical shift in criminal tactics around the world and across the sub-Saharan region, as syndicates increasingly move away from traditional physical crossings to highly sophisticated cyber-enabled human trafficking.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁: 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘀

Trafficking in persons is no longer confined to physical borders or illegal border crossings. In today’s digital age, organised criminal networks exploit social media platforms, messaging applications, and fake job advertisements to target vulnerable individuals.

The 2026 theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” draws urgent attention to a growing crisis affecting unemployed youth, graduates, students, and professionals. Traffickers frequently pose as legitimate overseas recruitment agencies, romantic partners, online employers, or educational agents offering fake scholarships and lucrative jobs.

Once lured, victims are stripped of their documents and trapped in forced labour, sexual exploitation, or debt bondage.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆

A dangerous trend highlighted this year is the trafficking of individuals into secure scam compounds. Victims are held against their will and forced to conduct online fraud schemes against global targets.

In these scenarios, victims endure severe physical abuse, threats, and coercion, making them simultaneously exploited workers and forced participants in transnational cybercrime.

𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

AHTD notes that high youth unemployment, economic hardships, and a lack of awareness regarding digital recruitment tactics remain the primary drivers making citizens vulnerable to these schemes.

The Department is actively coordinating national efforts to strengthen enforcement, enhance public vigilance, prosecute offenders, and build stronger partnerships to combat trafficking in persons.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗻𝘀

✅ Verify opportunities through the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or AHTD.

✅ Conduct thorough research on recruitment agencies.

✅ Be sceptical of promises of high salaries for minimal work.

✅ Report suspicious activity immediately.

✅ Support victims of human trafficking as they reintegrate into communities.
